Greece: Part 1, Santorini sights and Wines

Greece

Santorini
We travelled to Santorini 2 weeks ago. Newark to Frankfort, Frankfort to Athens and Athens to Santorini. Long trip with 7 hour time change. We flew to Santorini because the ferries take a long time. We did not check luggage but beware that we did not use gates in Frankfort, Athens or Santorini meaning I was lugging luggage up and down lots of stairs.
We rented a car at the Santorini airport. Avis was the company but they were out of cars when we arrived. After 40 minutes they gave us an Audi that had just been returned for 20 euros more per day. In addition, even though Expedia had told us that we had full insurance coverage, the agent attempted to sell us his insurance for 40 euros a day. Irony, the car was great.

Santorini is a caldera, half a volcanic crater. So one side of the island has cliffs and the other side has beaches, sort of. Hotels are built into cliffs which is pretty but makes them hard to get to. Everyone is seen lugging suitcases all over the place.

The beaches are rocky and scenic. Water shoes are recommended to swim. The Aegean sea is cool and refreshing to swim in.
Oya from the water. We took a catamaran from Oya to the other side of the island, stopping at 3 spots to swim. Oya is the other trendy town on the island. Supposedly the best sunsets. We had  dinner on the boat and watched the sunset from the boat. The boat ride was great and we really enjoyed it. We had some great conversations with couples from  Greece, Canada, Italy and other countries.
The path from Fira to Oya.

 Oya from the boat.

We stayed in Fira, the main town at the Aressana Hotel  Spa Hotel https://www.aressana.gr/ . The hotel was tough to find although Expedia had told us they had parking. It was at the end of a dead end street at the top of a hill. The hotel was very nice but bellhops were not a strength. I was a bit tired of our suitcases by that time. The hotel has a beautiful pool and is a quiet oasis in Fira.
Santorini is an interesting island. It is too crowded with tourists during the summer. At least 2  cruise ships come in every day. The sunsets are great but Maui has great sunsets as do lots of places around the world. Having a car was great as it allowed us to go wherever we wanted. However parking in Fira is a big problem.

Santorini Wine
Believe it or not Santorini has great, world class wineries. Hatzidakis http://www.hatzidakiswines.gr/en.html, Domaine Sigalas http://www.sigalas-wine.com/english/ and Estate Argyros http://estate-argyros.com/el/ have received very good scores on their wines from top wine publications. We visited Hatzidakis and Argyros. The local grapes are Assyrtiko and Aidani.  Assyrtiko makes a medium bodied wine with lots of flavor. I am told that it ages well. The alcohol content is 13.5 to 14%. Aidani is more floral and is initially more enticing to drink. The more Assyrtiko that we drank, the more I was impressed with the wine. I tried the Domaine Sigalas wine at home before we travelled and was not impressed. Maybe the ambiance of being in Greece  made the difference. I will be drinking more of it now that I am back home and will see if I continue to like it.

We drank local wines exclusively in Santorini and were not disappointed. The wines are not cheap and were between 30 and 45 Euros in restaurants; 18 to 30 euros at the wineries.
Domaine Sigalas wines are the wines that easiest to find. I have seen them regularly in stores in the U.S. Santorini wines are served in the local restaurants  on the island and also in the restaurants in Athens.  They make mainly  white wines although they have 1 predominate red wine grape, Mavrotragano. Mandilaria is anothe red grape.

Hatzidakis was bit hard to find but the winery is fascinating, very well equipped and the people were very friendly. We tasted 4 of their wines.Their 2015 Mavrotragano was tannic and not too heavy. It was good.  The ohter Mavrotragano that I tried on the island was a Domaine Sigalas and it was very heavy and tannic and  I did not enjoy it. We also tried Hatzidakis white wines. The Assyrtiko de Mylos, Vielles Vignes 2016 is an exceptional wine that is different from other Assyrtikos that we drank. It is dryer and more Chardonnay like. The WA has given it a 95. We brought a bottle home. Will see how it tasted in NJ. Don't think it will be available in the US. We also tasted their regular 2016 Assyrtiko and their 2016 Aidani. Both wines are very good. The Assyrtiko is available in the US. Bought it yesterday in Astor Wine in Manhattan for $23.

Argyros has a new modern winery facility. Their wines are very good. We tried 5 of them. They make a Vin Santo dessert wine is was very good. They have 3 types of Assyrtikos, no oak, 20% oak and 100% oak. I liked the no oak as I think that Assyrtiko has more than e nough flavor on its own.

Other Towns in Santorini
The other towns in Santorini are Oya and Kamari and Akritiri. Oya has supposely the greatest sunsets. This is because the sunsets from Fira are over another island while sunsets from Oya are over the sea. Oya however is a half an hour ride from Fira and there is no place to park as the crowds overwhelm. If you stay in Oya, it may be a different story.

Akritiri is the site of very old ruins, like 2400 BC old. The ruins are famous but they are ruins (lots of rubble), you need to use your imagination. All the good stuff has been taken to museums and the Archaeological museum in Athens( very good place) has an entire room dedicated to Akrikiri stuff.

Kamari is a year round town and is on a black rock beach.
 Hatzidakis winery.

 Fira

Argo restaurant in Fira. Food was so-so.

Great lunch. Souvlaki place in Fira. 2.50 euros for the sandwich. Perfection.

Fira harbor. You can walk up the cliffs, take a donkey or take a cable car.

Kamari beach.

 Estate Argyros.

 More scenes from the boat.

 The full sunset.

 The moon.

 Argyros wines.

Kamari has a strip of restaurants on the beach. The beach is black sand and rocks. Bring water shoes. We had sea bream and Greek salad for lunch. 2 fish, Greek salad, and half a carafe of wine for 28 euros. Yum!

 Fira

 Cruise ships.

 Hotels in Fira.
Need to show some sunsets from Fira.

 Mr E restaurant in Fira.

 Orzo paella.

 Lamb pizza.
 Dessert
Streets of Fira. More jewelry shops and t-shirts shops than the Caribbean.

 Restaurant in Akritiri

 Ruins at Akritiri

Trio of fish for lunch at Akritiri.

You can walk from Fira to Oya along the cliffs. There are 2 town along the way, Imerovigli and Firostefani. It is a long walk to Oya and we did not do it.

Athens next time.

Enjoy.

End of summer; my garden; Tablas Creek

My garden in the middle of August

My garden has had mixed results. Tomatoes are doing well, eggplant is great, peppers not too good and basil very good. String beans have been very good as well.
We have huge sunflowers.
 Tomatoes and basil.

wineries of the moment

Tablas Creek in Paso Robles, California. http://www.tablascreek.com/  They make a number of Rhone style wines. They are owned by Chateau Beaucastel in France. We had the 2013 Esprit de Tablas. This is their flagship wine and it retails around $55. The wine is great and the alcohol is is around 13.8%.
They make the Patelin de Tablas Blanc which is great and around $18 at Costco. It is a full bodied white wine. I had the 2015. It is a blend of several grapes.

Municipal Winemakers http://www.municipalwinemakers.com/ I think that I have mentioned them in the past. check out their wines and they make good stuff. Santa Barbara based. they make a variety of blends and some great Pinot Noirs. They just ran a special on a red and white wine with shipping included. Life is sweet. Have not received the wines yet but every wine that I have tried ha been real good. Vinous has already discovered.

The NJ farmers' markets (Montclair and Summit) are loaded with great produce. Yellow watermelon, great corn, broccoli, white nectarines, fish- mahi mahi, black bass, oysters, canary melon and the list goes on.

This time of year remember the NY Times plum torte. I made my first one of the season with the first Italian prune plums in the farmers' market. https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/3783-original-plum-torte?login=email The recipe is easy, delicious and a classic.

Baked oysters that I made with NJ oysters.
Rack of lamb  from my oven with eggplant and string beans from my garden.
 Wine of the moment

Ulysse Collin Extra Brut Blanc de Blanc Les Maillon $75, disgorged Feb 2016. Amazing golden color with great flavor and good bubbles. Loved it. A special treat. Disgorgement dates  are very important. How else do you know which non vintage champagne batch that you are buying and drinking. Think about it. Be wary of Champagne reviews that do not specify which disgorgement date wine they are reviewing. Do not drink non vintage Champagnes with out the disgorgement date. They are printed on the back label.

2015 Jean Perrier et Fils Vin de Savoie Apremont - A light white wine from France that was $10. dry, minerally with some fruit. We enjoyed it. found it a the Wine Library.

We still love Atlantic City and the beach at Brigantine. Check it out.

Enjoy.

Anguilla

Anguilla

Anguilla is a great place to on vacation if you like the beach. The island is about 16 miles long and 3 miles wide and has about 15,000 people..The beaches are extraordinary and there are a number of top of the line hotels to choose from, all located on a gorgeous beach.
Hotels include Cuisinart (they now have 2 hotels-Cuisinart and the Reef), the Four Seasons formerly the Viceroy, Malliouhana, Cap Juluca, and  Zemi. The island has 2 main resort areas the West End and the Shoal Bay area. It can take about 25 minutes to go from one area to the other so we tend not to go to both areas when we visit the island.
Food is good but it is NY prices. There are some exceptions. Blanchard's Beach Shack is an informal shack on a great beach, Mead's Bay, and the prices are very reasonable and the food is great. Tacos, salads, some fish, good desserts, ice cream, it has an eclectic menu.
Picnic tables and beach at Blanchards's Beach Shack.

The menu of the shack.

Blanchards is also an expensive restaurant for dinner and  is next door to the Beach Shack. Other top restaurants are Veya, Malliouhana, Mango's, restaurants at the Cuisinart, Pimms at Cap Juluca. Many people we meet in Anguilla tend to collect going to all of the fancy restaurants on the island. We go for the beaches not the food. You can get good food but nothing extraordinary as very little is grown on the island and everything is imported.

The best way to get to Anguilla is to fly to St Maarten and take a short ferry ride to Anguilla. We like to take a 15 minute (with no traffic) cab ride from the airport to Marigot, the French capital in St Martin and take the public ferry to Anguilla. There are boats from the airport in St Maarten but they are 4 times the price and land at the same terminal in Anguilla. They are more convenient if you are not familiar with the islands.

If you have questions about the island, drop me a line.

Wines

Recently had a great 2012 Syrah from Denner, a Paso Robles winery in California. It is not cheap but I picked up 2 bottles for $35 each. The wine is full of flavor, lively and was great to drink. It is a big wine but drinks easily.

We tried a 2016 Sigilas (winery) Assyrtiko(grape) from the island of Santorini in Greece. It is a white wine which critics love. The wine is heavy, lots of flavor but did not set off any bells. It was OK and not sure if I would drink again although we are going to Santorini so.... The wine is made for aging and so I should probably try one with more age.

Enjoy the Fourth. Today is a beer and barbecue day.

NYC Ballet; Indianapolis 500; Garden time; Whirligig, Anguilla

Anguilla

We went to Anguilla last week. We flew Jet Blue from JFK to St Maarten as United does not go to St Maarten very often in the off season. Jet Blue was good. They provide lots of legroom. After landing in St Maarten we took a cab to Marigot. 15 minutes and $20 and we then took the public ferry to Anguilla. Prior to getting on the ferry we stopped at Serafinas, a great French boulangerie. Picked up an apple tarte, apricot tarte and a pear tarte and a ham and cheese sandwich on a baguette.

We picked up a car at Andy's car rental at the ferry terminal in Anguilla. A small Nissan March. They drive on the other side of the road. The car had the controls on the right side. Every time I turned I turned on the windshield wipers instead of the directionals. The car was fine.

We stayed at Cap Juluca. https://www.belmond.com/cap-juluca-anguilla/Really enjoyed ourselves. The beach is spectacular.

Finally saw a flash of green. I have been looking for it just after a sunset for years. Low and behold it surprised just before dinner one night.

Dinner at he  Malliouhana. The hotel restaurant was beautiful and the food very good. The restaurant has not been discovered by the foodies traveling to Anguilla.

The start of my garden.

NYC Ballet

We saw a Midsummer's Night Dream performed by the NYC Ballet at Lincoln Center in NYC. It is a rare full length NYC Ballet ballet choreographed by Balanchine with music by Mendelssohn. The ballet was lively, funny and the dancing exquisite. We sat in the 4th ring on the side for $30. The seats were very good with solid sight lines. If you have never been to the ballet, check out the NYC Ballet.http://www.nycballet.com/?gclid=CjwKEAjwjunJBRDzl6iCpoKS4G0SJACJAx-VFbW2-Em4hIDxPg3LHE-YHLZLsNUBt2RUST2-9URU-BoC-tDw_wcB

Indy 500

I had the opportunity to attend a practice for the Indy 500. The cars go so fast and  make so much noise. Very impressive.

Whirligig

We attended Whirligig at the New Group http://www.thenewgroup.org/the-whirligig.html in NYC. Great cast with Norbert Leo Butz and Zosia Mamet written by Hamish Linklater. At the beginning of the second act strange noise and lights started. There was a fire alarm. The play stopped and the actors had no idea of what to do. We were told to sit until they had furthter info. We were then told to evacuate. There were 2 other theaters with plays and it was rainy and windy. We waited in the lobby as the fire trucks came. After 45 minutes we were told that the play was cancelled. It was definitely a new experience for us at the theater.

We were able to rebook for another date in June. The first act was intriguing and the acting is great. We saw the last act yesterday and enjoyed it. The play has no resolution for the story but the acting makes the play very watchable. Celebrity alert -Bill Murray was hanging out in the lobby

Derren Brown Secrethttps://atlantictheater.org/playevents/derren-brown-secret/

We saw this show a few weeks ago. He is  a  mentalist/magician. The show was very good.
and kept us amazed. We figured out a few tricks but cannot figure out the final big trick. It was definitely worth seeing. BTW - he called on me for one of his tricks. That made the show special.

Wines

Check out this article (Let’s Be Clear: Bad Wines Are Bad Wines, Period) on wine by Eric Asimov in the NY Times. He discusses  the impact of bad wine on on wine drinkers.https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/15/dining/processed-wines-dont-drink-them.html?rref=collection%2Fcolumn%2FThe%20Pour&action=click&contentCollection=Food&module=Collection&region=Marginalia&src=me&version=column&pgtype=article

Enjoy. More on Anguilla soon.
